Moving Across The Country With Aspergers

In October, we found out my husband had been transferred across the country.  We had about 2 weeks to move from Oklahoma to Alabama!  Moving alone has its drawbacks.  Add an 8 year old with Asperger's Syndrome who is change resistant and you have an eventful mix.

We moved just before Halloween.  We left big brother back in Oklahoma to pursue an education.  Grandma and Grandpa are also still in Oklahoma.  So, while my husband worked at a new job from dawn to dusk, I unpacked the entire residence, began our home school program and tried to help my 8 year old adjust to a new environment, and a room of his own (for the first time ever).

It is now December and I am happy to say we are holding our own.  We have had some major hick ups but came through them unscathed.  However, that didn't just happen.  I planned for every detail possible.  When we moved, I made sure to pack small important things in a special suit case.  We came prepared with dye free, wheat free snacks, hand held computer games, a phone with unlimited long distance calling and an extra helping of patience.  I offered special treats for trying new foods and activities.  We actually enjoyed an art exhibit together (mother and 8 year old son).  We tried sushi and raised the ceiling on our limits.  Not every day has been perfect, of course.  But we have made great strides.
