Give Yourself A "Back 2 School" Break

Going back to school with Asperger's Syndrome can be a real challenge.  If your kids attend public schools, the first few months of school can be filled with anxiety.  As a parent, you may be concerned with I.E.P's, working with the teacher/s to make sure school programs meet your child's needs, and providing a safe place for your child to go when he or she feels stressed.  Home educating is not that different.  You may be concerned with choosing the right curriculum, or finding activities and social situations that your child will respond best to.   One step we often overlook is to provide a stress free place for ourselves.  Remember, you can't be the best for your child if you are not the best for yourself.

Being a type A personality and home educating a child with Asperger's, I can definitely relate to those who have a difficult time relaxing.  So I have put together a few ideas for those of us who are driven.

Relaxation Ideas For The Most Ambitious of Parents:
  • Keep a journal
  • Scrapbook
  • Have lunch with a friend
  • Spend 20 minutes in a hot tub
  • Blog
  • Take a walk
  • Play tennis
  • Go for a jog
  • Get a chair massage
  • Take up yoga
  • Indulge in dark chocolate once a week
  • Sushi Therapy (my personal favorite)
  • Take up painting
